Présentation du contenu
The Fonds Thomas Whittemore - Institut byzantin, ca. 1890s-1960s, consists of correspondence, annual reports, acquisition lists, newspaper clippings, postcards, article extracts, translations, photographic prints, film and glass plate negatives, ephemeral items, as well as manuscripts, specimens, moldings of seals and coins, Coptic textiles, and icons. The collection primarily documents the history, mission, and activities of the Paris Library of the Byzantine Institute (Paris Library) in Paris, France, between the 1920s and 1960s. It also documents Thomas Whittemore's archaeological and humanitarian missions in North Africa and Eastern Europe between the 1910s and 1920s, as well as the preservation projects of The Byzantine Institute, Inc., (Byzantine Institute) in Istanbul, Turkey, from the 1930s to the 1940s.
This collection also includes personal correspondence from/to Thomas Whittemore, Boris N. Ermoloff, and Mathew S. Prichard. There are also travel photographs, journals and/or quarterly magazines from Tufts College between 1891 and 1906, and papers that were created and/or kept by Ermoloff concerning a masonic lodge in Paris, France.
Furthermore, Jean Ebersolt's and Marc Rosenberg's personal papers (in whole or in part) are also included in this collection. They mostly contain research notes, article extracts, newspaper clippings, and photographs.

For the transfer history of the Paris Library, from The Byzantine Institute, Inc., to the École nationale des Langues orientales vivantes and Collège de France, see the
After Whittemore's death in June 1950, The Byzantine Institute decided to keep all of the general library collections in Paris, including the personal papers of Thomas Whittemore, Boris N. Ermoloff, Mathew S. Prichard, and other research papers by byzantine scholars. However, all fieldwork materials, including the administrative papers created by The Byzantine Institute and Thomas Whittemore, were transferred to Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection in Washington, D.C., between 1953 and 1957. For more information, see the finding aid, The Byzantine and Dumbarton Oaks Fieldwork Records and Papers, ca. late 1920s-2000s , created by the Image Collections and Fieldwork Archives (ICFA) of Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection.
Jean Ebersolt's papers were donated to the Paris Library by Mrs. Ebersolt on January 20, 1956. [For more information, see the legacy administrative papers “BIBLIOTHEQUE BYZANTINE / Rapport Annuel / du Bibliothécaire / pour l'Année 1960” and “DON / de / Madame Jean Ebersolt / 20 JAN 1956. / LISTE / des tirages à part et périodiques / offerts / à la Bibliothèque de l'Institut Byzantin / par / MADAME JEAN EBERSOLT” (in the folder “Secrétariat / 1956-1966”).]
The acquisition of Marc Rosenberg's archives was not documented. Overall, a small portion of his collection was kept in the Paris Library and the rest of his archives were transferred to the institutional archives of Dumbarton Oaks.

Commentaire
A portion of the collection (i.e., Subgroup 01, Series 08, Series 09, and Series10) was initially processed between November 1991 and November 1995. There are legacy inventory lists for Subgroup 01, Series 08, Series 09, and Series 10.
In 2005, items in Series 06, Subseries 04 were examined and described. Additionally, the letters and dedications in Subgroup 02, Series 02 and Series 03 were photocopied and transcribed. In ca. 2011-2012, the transcription project was completed, including the list of name index terms. For more information about the transcription project, see
In 2012, a succinct finding aid was published in Collège de France's collection management system Salamandre, which also included the newly transcribed correspondence and the list of name index terms. For more information,
Starting in April 2016, all items related to Thomas Whittemore and The Byzantine Institute in the Bibliothèque byzantine were examined and processed. The existing list of name index terms was also enhanced, and transferred from Microsoft Word to Microsoft Excel (for more information about the new name taxonomy list, please consult with the Service des Archives or the Bibliothèque byzantine staff).
The box order for Subgroup 01, Series 08 was also reorganized, but the contents' original order was respected. The new box order roughly corresponds to the chronological order of Thomas Whittemore's and/or The Byzantine Institute's travels or fieldwork projects. Some items in Subgroup 01, Series 08 were also removed from their original box location due to their size, format, or condition.
Archival descriptions were also improved. Contextualized information was added to the series and folder units. Original titles, supplied by The Byzantine Institute, were transcribed verbatim and are written with quotes. However, secondary titles, supplied by the Bibliothèque byzantine staff starting in the 1990s, are in brackets.
The finding aid was finalized and revised on Salamandre in October 2017. For more information about the project, see
